A few interested individuals gathered on Saturday, April 14, in Saskatoon for a mini star book workshop led by Cathryn Miller.
A good time was had by all, and participants each went home with three different star books.
Special thanks to Leona for sharing her studio space with us.
If you would like to see more pictures from the workshop, you can find them here.

We will work with both historical and contemporary structures and materials. Everyone with an interest in books is welcome. No prior bookbinding experience necessary.

Cost: $135+ GST and service fees (includes all materials)
The Coptic link stitch binding is a historical binding that looks surprisingly modern. It is named for the chains of sewing stitches linking across the spine. The books are quick to sew, flat when open, constructed without glue and are very sturdy. Today, the best known Coptic books leave the sewing and the spine uncovered. A historical alternative is to case-in the books, resulting in books that look conventional but are still quick to sew, and open flat. Participants will construct one of each. No prior bookbinding experience necessary.
When: Saturday, March 18th, 10 am to 4 pm
Cost: $75+ GST (includes all materials)

Just a quick reminder: Susan Mills will be teaching a two day box making workshop in Saskatoon, December 2nd and 3rd, 2017.
Build a classic “clamshell” book/portfolio box the first day. This storage box completely encloses the protected item and can be custom fitted to any size. Consisting of 3 basic parts – the lower tray, the upper tray and the outer case – it requires precise measuring and cutting. The boards will be pre-cut allowing for a positive box experience.
On the second day, you will make a hinged case. Japanese books are traditionally stored in hinged cases that fold around one or more volumes. This box is a variation of the book case. It can be made small (jewelry) or large (quilt) and can be made of many materials. Construct a prototype box as a basis for future boxes and cases – and – measure and cut all the boards by hand.
All materials and the use of tools are included.
Susan Mills has been binding books, making boxes, and and teaching these techniques for a quarter century! She is on the faculty of Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax.

Location: Void Gallery, 312 Ave B South, Saskatoon, SK, Canada
